Distinguished and Famous people from Pascoe Vale
🏡 John Pascoe Fawkner
John Pascoe Fawkner bought land in 1839 for the private village of Pascoeville, an enterprise connected with the later name Pascoe Vale. His Bell View farm lay in what is now Oak Park, where he lived from 1840 to 1855. Plans included public facilities and a promising position beside the road towards Sydney, but development remained limited and another route became more important. The story adds an uncertain property venture to the familiar account of Fawkner’s role in Melbourne’s beginnings. His local scheme left a durable name, even though the bustling village he envisaged did not promptly materialise.
🏛️ Christine Campbell
Christine Campbell grew up in Pascoe Vale and later represented the electorate in the Victorian parliament from 1996 to 2014. Her career included ministerial responsibility for community services, consumer affairs and senior Victorians. In a local historical-society talk after retirement, she recalled Cumberland Road and the community networks that helped her understand the area she represented. The association combines childhood experience with public service. Her account also recognised the challenge of becoming a recognisable political figure while protecting family privacy, a practical concern behind the more formal parliamentary record.
